Happy Independence Day to Mexico (and parts of Alta California and Texas, etc.). On this day in 1810, Miguel Hildago y Costilla, uttered the Grito de Dolores, in Dolores, Guanajuato, that galvanized the independence movement of Mexico:

"Long live Our Lady of Guadalupe! Death to bad government! Death to the gachupines!"

Shortly after, the movement marched on Mexico City. The Mexican War of Independence lasted from 1810-1821, and cost Mexico over 450,000 casualties.
